Feeling consoled, he stood up and marched towards the door that led into his personal suite of rooms. He opened it - and jumped, startled, to find somebody standing behind it. ‘What the hell are you doing there?’ he demanded, covering his embarrassment with anger. ‘I thought I told you to stay in your room. Do I have to lock you in?’ The woman looked bemused. ‘I was looking’, she said, in a halting, uncertain voice, for the Doctor.’ ‘So, you can talk after all.’ ‘Have you seen the Doctor?’ ‘He can’t see you now. Compassion.’ The woman didn’t react to Rick’s use of her name at all. If anything, she had forgotten he was there again. ‘Part of me, part of him. . . ’ she murmured softly. Rick put his arm around her shoulders and guided her back along the corridor. ‘I’m doing my best to bring the Doctor here for you. The best thing you can do is stay put and wait for him. You’ll do that, won’t you?’ ‘The one I sensed,’ said Compassion. ‘Why won’t he talk to me?’ She stopped suddenly, and looked around as if seeing her surroundings for the first time. ‘How did I get here?’ This was beginning to irritate Rick. He wasn’t used to dealing with people he couldn’t intimidate. Still, now that he knew what this woman - this creature - was, he knew he couldn’t let her go. He had to be polite. ‘Don’t you remember?’ he asked. ‘I remember. . . so many things. So many sensations. It’s difficult to separate them, hard to remember how time flows from one point to another. I can see yesterday and tomorrow and they look the same. I can see the whole of the tapestry but I’m lost when I step inside it.’ Something about her words, her voice, transported Rick away from this world. He saw universes in her eyes, and they sparked a flame of desire within him. Then Compassion blinked, snapped out of her reverie and shrugged Rick away with a disgusted frown. ‘Who are you?’ ‘Tm Rick. I’m in charge of this world.’ ‘What, you?’ Rick bristled at her look of contempt. He almost slapped the woman to teach her a lesson, but that would have been counterproductive.
